Ijebu Pleasure Club was born from a simple fictional idea - imagine a small-town covers band in Nigeria in 1986 that’s just been told it needs to switch from playing their Afrobeat style of Fela Kuti to top-40 hits if they want to keep the gig. They don’t own any of the records but they’re going to give it a try.
Saxophonist/arranger Ben McNicoll created this 11-piece ensemble because he wanted to share Afrobeat music with New Zealanders and mix it up with pop… but mostly it just seemed like fun.
With its powerful five-horn lineup and tight-grooving rhythm section Ijebu Pleasure Club will get you on your feet dancing and convince you that all pop music comes from Africa…or should.
